London Canal Museum

We were successful in assisting the London Canal Museum to expand their existing tourist attraction by securing planning permission for a permanent pontoon for safe visitor access located externally to the museum. The museum wanted to expand its exhibitions by mooring a historic boat in Battlebridge Basin, with the intention of allowing visitors to explore the boat. The opportunity to visit a historic canal boat has not previously been possible across the south of England, other than on an occasional basis. Prior to submission of the application, we had to seek consent from the Canal and River Trust to be able to install the pontoon on a waterway within their control. The Trust were also a key consultee during the consideration of the planning application.

With approval being granted for this development, the additional exhibition provided by the pontoon will allow the museum to continue operating through boosting its visitor numbers. The pontoon provides an exciting opportunity for the museum to present its historic items in a unique way and encourage more people to engage with London’s canal history, leading to a better visitor experience. It was a great project in which both our experience in waterways and tourism was drawn on.
